The NY Heat Act: A Steaming Pile of BS or a Breath of Fresh Air?

Hey there Folks!
Melvin P. Atwater here and you’re not gonna believe the big old Bag of BS I have for you today!
I’m sure a few of you will call BS on it, but it’s on the internet so it must be real! Quantum Universe and all, you know. Maybe not here and maybe not now, but somewhere, somehow.
The logic is infallible!
-Sincerely,
Melvin P. Atwater

Hello, dear readers! It’s Eli Harrison here, your favorite BS detector. Today, we’re going to talk about a hot topic that’s been causing quite a stir – the NY Heat Act. Now, if you’re not familiar with this, it’s a proposal to end subsidies for new gas hookups and transition away from natural gas. Sounds like a breath of fresh air, right? But as we all know, when it comes to politics, there’s always a steaming pile of BS lurking somewhere.

The proponents of this measure are elated with Gov. Kathy Hochul backing key components of their bill. But the road to implementation is long and fraught with aggressive opposition from labor unions and the gas industry. The bill’s supporters, packing the Million Dollar Staircase, chanted “New York HEAT” and lawmakers spoke in support of the bill. But Assembly Democratic leadership has not endorsed the measure. So, where does that leave us?

The bill also proposes to keep energy costs at 6 percent of income for moderate and low-income New York residents. But the Public Service Commission could limit the costs of the program to subsidize energy costs at 3 percent of utility revenues. This should prevent major increases for manufacturers and businesses to pay for the residential limits. But what about the workers who maintain the gas system? They are concerned about losing their jobs.

So, is the NY Heat Act a steaming pile of BS or a breath of fresh air? Well, like most things in life, it’s a bit of both. It’s a step towards a cleaner, greener future, but it’s also a potential job killer. And as we all know, when it comes to politics, the devil is always in the details. So, let’s keep our eyes on this one and see how it unfolds. Until next time, keep calling out the BS!
